Title is a reference to the “X-files”, a TV show about the FBI investigation of aliens and the paranormal.

Last week, on Sept, 6, the Sunspot Solar Observatory in New Mexico was evacuated and “temporarily” shutdown. Along with the observatory, the local post office was also evacuated and shutdown.  The residents of the small town of Sunspot were also evacuated.

Here’s where it starts to evoke the tin foil hat, conspiracy theories.

The FBI has mysteriously taken charge of the site and the apparently were the ones who ordered the evacuation. Local law enforcement was asked to standby but were not told why the observatory was closed down. The county sheriff stated, “The FBI is refusing to tell us what’s going on. We’ve got people up there (at Sunspot) that requested us to stand by while they evacuate it. Nobody would really elaborate on any of the circumstances as to why. The FBI were up there. What their purpose was nobody will say. But for the FBI to get involved that quick and be so secretive about it, there was a lot of stuff going on up there. There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers but nobody would tell us anything.”

The observatory is still closed and no one is talking.

Hmmmm….

I would have at first guessed a bomb threat, but why would anyone but a disgruntled former employee want to bomb and observatory.  That guess now seems unlikely to be correct because it shouldn’t take a over a week to disarm or remove a bomb.  Also unless it was a “dirty” bomb, why would the residents need to be evacuated?  A “dirty” nuclear bomb seems highly unlikely because at most such a bomb would kill less than 20 people in that location.  Not much of an effective terrorist threat.

A second guess would be something like anthrax or other chemical or biological agent was found at the observatory because the post office was closed. A few things seem to contradict that idea. No one was reported hospitalized.  No other post offices have been closed which you would have expected if a dangerous package passed through the system. Also why would there be “… a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers…“?

Oddly, the authorities “usually” issue some sort of statement about a situation, but for over a week the Feds have been completely silent.

My guesses now are Bigfoot or aliens.

Maybe I should start making myself a tin foil hat.  Just to be safe…
